The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Strong Wind Signal, No.3 at 10.40 am on Saturday as Severe Tropical Storm Trami moved westwards. The storm is expected to move across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea towards the seas south of Hainan Island on Saturday. Due to the combined effect of Trami and the northeast monsoon, strong winds will gradually affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. Local winds are expected to strengthen throughout the day, with some previously sheltered areas becoming exposed as winds veer to the east later today.

While Trami is expected to weaken in the coming days, there are uncertainties regarding its subsequent movement and intensity. It may linger over the seas south of Hainan Island early next week and potentially turn eastwards, moving across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea again. Another storm, Tropical Cyclone Kong-Rey, is forecasted to move across the western North Pacific to the east of the Philippines in the coming days.

The weather is expected to settle down around Tuesday next week, with brighter spells leading into the weekend and temperatures reaching highs of 29 degrees Celsius. The No. 3 typhoon signal warns of strong winds affecting or expected to affect Hong Kong within the next 12 hours. As a precaution, classes of kindergartens and schools for children with physical or intellectual disabilities will be suspended. Additionally, scheduled ferry services may be cancelled depending on worsening conditions. However, bus and MTR services are not expected to be affected.

Residents are advised to secure loose objects such as flower pots or drying racks, and prepare for possible flooding in low-lying areas. It is important to note that tropical cyclones are becoming stronger and more destructive due to warming seas caused by the climate crisis. With over 90 per cent of excess heat in the atmosphere ending up in oceans, the impact of rising greenhouse gases is preventing heat from escaping to space.

As we navigate through these weather patterns, it is crucial to stay informed and prepared for any changes in the storm’s path. Stay safe and take necessary precautions to ensure your well-being during this time.
