Chief Executive John Lee recently extended his congratulations to the athletes representing the Special Administrative Region (SAR) for their outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics. This year marked a significant milestone as Team Hong Kong, China secured more than one gold medal for the first time in Olympic history. Foil fencer Edgar Cheung and épée fencer Vivian Kong brought home gold medals, while swimmer Siobhan Haughey clinched two bronze medals. As a result of these exceptional achievements, the SAR achieved its highest-ever ranking by securing the 37th position on the medals table.
In a statement, Lee commended every Hong Kong athlete for their unwavering dedication and exceptional display of talent on the Olympic stage. He emphasized the athletes’ determination, perseverance, and professionalism, highlighting the spirit of sportsmanship exhibited by each individual. To further support the development of sports in the region, the government under Lee’s leadership announced plans to enhance sporting facilities. These initiatives include the conversion of an existing sports center into a specialized fencing venue, as well as expediting the study for the construction of a fencing arena and an international standard swimming pool. Lee revealed that the administration had allocated over HK$940 million in funding to the Sports Institute through the Elite Athletes Development Fund in the current financial year, signifying a significant increase of approximately 40 percent compared to five years ago.
Looking ahead, Lee expressed confidence in the continued support from society for SAR’s athletes, especially with the upcoming Paris Paralympic Games and Hong Kong’s co-hosting of the National Games next year. He believed that the unwavering spirit and dedication of Hong Kong’s athletes would continue to shine on the global stage, showcasing the indomitable spirit of the region.
