The latest report on cybersecurity readiness in local enterprises has shown significant progress, with a 5.8-point increase in the overall index score compared to last year. Compiled by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD), the “Hong Kong Enterprise Cyber Security Readiness Index” evaluated 442 companies.
While the overall improvement is encouraging, there is still work to be done, particularly in the area of “Human Awareness Building.” This category focuses on how well employees are informed and vigilant about potential cyber threats. Ada Chung, the Privacy Commissioner, emphasized the importance of regular training for employees, including cyber security drills.
Chung also highlighted the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) by hackers to carry out sophisticated attacks. She mentioned that deepfake videos, which can create fake identities in a matter of minutes, are becoming increasingly common. In response to this evolving threat landscape, Alex Chan from HKPC suggested that enterprises should leverage AI for defensive purposes. For example, using AI algorithms to detect voice prints in videos can help identify whether the content is legitimate.
Chan cautioned that while AI can be a powerful tool for enhancing cybersecurity defenses, it is also exploited by malicious actors. He stressed the need for organizations to stay ahead of cyber threats by embracing innovative technologies like AI.
To support enterprises in strengthening their cybersecurity posture, the PCPD and HKPC will launch a series of training programs. These initiatives include a “data security training series for Small-and-Medium Enterprises” scheduled for 2025, as well as specialized training on “Phishing Defence Services.”
In today’s digital age, where cyber threats continue to evolve, it is essential for organizations to prioritize cybersecurity readiness. By investing in employee training, adopting advanced technologies like AI, and staying informed about the latest threats, businesses can better protect themselves against cyber attacks and safeguard sensitive data. The collaborative efforts of industry stakeholders, such as the HKPC and PCPD, play a crucial role in building a resilient cybersecurity ecosystem for enterprises in Hong Kong.
