HK Students Excel in Global Maths and Science Study

Hong Kong students have once again showcased their academic prowess on the global stage, ranking among the top performers in mathematical and scientific literacy according to the latest results of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). This major international research, conducted every four years, provides valuable insights into the strengths and areas for improvement in education systems worldwide.

Impressive Rankings Across Different Cohorts

Primary four pupils from Hong Kong achieved a commendable fourth place out of 58 economies in mathematics, although they dropped from the second position in the previous survey in 2019. On the other hand, their performance in science saw a significant improvement as they climbed six spots to ninth place. Similarly, secondary two students maintained their excellence by securing the fifth position in mathematics among 44 economies, with a remarkable leap from 17th to eighth place in science.

Expert Insights and Future Prospects

Professor Hau Kit-tai, who oversaw the research in Hong Kong, highlighted the consistent exceptional performance of local students in mathematics over the years. He noted that while the progress in science is evident, there is room for further enhancement. The recent shift in the primary curriculum to prioritize science as an independent subject reflects a strategic move by the Education Bureau to elevate the quality of science education.

Hau emphasized the importance of continued emphasis on science education to attract more science graduates into the teaching profession, thereby enhancing overall instructional quality. Moreover, he observed a narrowing performance gap between male and female students across various cohorts, signaling a positive trend towards gender equality in academic achievement.

As Hong Kong students celebrate their achievements in the TIMSS rankings, it is evident that sustained efforts in promoting excellence in mathematics and science education will pave the way for future success on the global academic stage. The determination and dedication of both students and educators alike serve as a testament to the unwavering commitment to educational excellence in Hong Kong.
