The government recently announced that Eddie Cheung, the Director of Broadcasting at RTHK, will be taking on a new role as the permanent secretary for the environment and ecology starting in January. He will be replacing Janice Tse, who will begin her pre-retirement leave on January 2.
Additionally, Manda Chan, the deputy secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, will be assuming the position of heading the Leisure and Cultural Services Department next Wednesday, taking over from the retiring Vincent Liu.
Civil service chief Ingrid Yeung expressed her confidence in both Cheung and Chan, describing them as seasoned administrative officers with strong leadership and management skills. She thanked the retiring officials for their service and professionalism.
Cheung has been part of the government’s administrative service since October 1993 and was promoted to the rank of administrative officer staff grade A in April of this year. He has held various roles in different bureaus and departments, including a notable three-year term as the special representative for Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Union before taking up the position at RTHK.
On the other hand, Chan joined the administrative service in September 1995 and rose to the rank of Administrative Officer Staff Grade B1 in April of this year. She has a strong background, having served as the Commissioner for Narcotics of the Security Bureau for over three years starting in 2016 and later as the Commissioner for Rehabilitation of the Labour and Welfare Bureau until October 2022.
Both Cheung and Chan have dedicated years of service to the government and have proven themselves as capable leaders. Their appointments to these new roles highlight their commitment to serving the community and bringing their expertise to areas that are crucial for the well-being of Hong Kong.
As the government prepares for these transitions, the public can expect continuity and professionalism in the management of environmental, ecological, and leisure and cultural services under the leadership of Cheung and Chan. Their wealth of experience and dedication to public service will undoubtedly contribute to the betterment of the community as they take on these new responsibilities.
