Encouraging Hong Kong Youth to Engage in Diplomacy
The Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong has recently launched the 17th edition of the Hong Kong Cup Diplomatic Knowledge Contest. This contest aims to promote a greater understanding of China’s foreign affairs among Hong Kong youth. The theme for this year’s contest is “Love Diplomacy, Love the World,” emphasizing the importance of diplomacy in fostering global relationships.
Deputy Commissioner Li Yongsheng highlighted the significance of major historical events in diplomacy, such as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference. These events serve as crucial milestones in the history of diplomacy and provide valuable insights for young participants.
Learning Opportunities Through the Contest
The contest, organized jointly by the commissioner’s office, the Education Bureau, and the Better Hong Kong Foundation, serves as a platform for students to delve deeper into China’s foreign policy. It encourages them to explore major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics and brainstorm ways to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s foreign affairs.
One of the exciting rewards for winning teams from the previous edition was a study tour to Beijing and Gansu Province. This immersive experience allowed students to connect theoretical knowledge from textbooks with real-world insights gained during the tour. Director of Broadcasting Eddie Cheung expressed optimism about the impact of this tour on students’ understanding of diplomacy.
Personal Stories and Aspirations
Amidst the preparations for the upcoming contest, a Form three student from St. Paul’s College shared his enthusiasm for participating. He mentioned his dedication to staying informed about global news and China’s diplomatic policies through extensive reading. Despite not reaching the final competition last year, he remains determined to excel in the online quiz and secure a spot in the final round this time.
Applications for the contest will open on December 9, with the first round scheduled for March next year and the final competition set for May. This initiative not only offers a valuable learning opportunity for Hong Kong youth but also nurtures a sense of responsibility towards contributing to the nation’s diplomatic endeavors. By empowering the younger generation with knowledge and awareness of global affairs, the contest paves the way for a more informed and engaged society.
