Hong Kong’s security minister criticized those who have been criticizing Olympic fencing champion Vivian Kong for her alleged pro-establishment ties. Secretary for Security Chris Tang stated that any Hong Kong citizen who is patriotic, supportive of the government, and against violence should support Kong. He emphasized that the fencer’s stance is worth encouraging and condemned personal attacks against her by what he referred to as “villains.”

Kong made history for Hong Kong by winning the women’s epee individual event at the Paris Olympics. However, skepticism arose about her political affiliations following her victory. Tang defended Kong, stating that she has been supportive of the government and has spoken out against violence. He also criticized those who use threatening means to silence people from expressing patriotism and support for the government.

The controversy surrounding Kong intensified as details about her past affiliations with pro-establishment groups emerged. Despite her success in fencing, Kong faced backlash for her political views, particularly after a paper she allegedly wrote in 2021 surfaced online. The paper criticized supporters of the Occupy Central movement and praised Hong Kong’s Basic Law in China’s legal system.

In response to the backlash, Kong announced her decision to step away from professional fencing and join the Hong Kong Jockey Club as Assistant External Affairs Manager. She will be focusing on promoting youth affairs and sports development in her new role, starting this Sunday.

The debate over Kong’s political stance reflects the ongoing tensions in Hong Kong regarding patriotism, government support, and political affiliations. The public scrutiny faced by Kong highlights the challenges that athletes and public figures encounter when their personal beliefs come under the spotlight. Despite the controversy, Kong’s achievements in fencing have undoubtedly made her a prominent figure in Hong Kong’s sports scene.
