Chief Executive John Lee had a very busy day during his visit to Peru, attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit. He signed a free trade agreement with Peru and had meetings with leaders from Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore on the sidelines of the summit.
During an informal dialogue, Lee highlighted Hong Kong’s strengths and its role in China’s Belt and Road initiative and Apec development to regional leaders. He also met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, expressing gratitude for Malaysia’s support in establishing an Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur, the fourth in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) region.
Additionally, Lee praised Malaysia for taking the chairmanship of Asean next year and hoped for continued support for Hong Kong’s early accession to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (Rcep). In further discussions with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, both key trading partners of Hong Kong, Lee strengthened ties and explored opportunities for collaboration.
The highlight of Lee’s day was the signing of the FTA between Hong Kong and Peru, followed by a relaxing evening watching cultural performances at an Apec gala dinner. On the following day, Lee is scheduled to attend the Apec Economic Leaders’ meeting retreat and engage with Peruvian business sector representatives.
This series of events demonstrates Hong Kong’s commitment to fostering international relations, expanding trade opportunities, and showcasing its economic strengths on a global platform. By engaging with leaders from various countries and participating in key discussions, Chief Executive John Lee is actively promoting Hong Kong’s interests and seeking avenues for growth and cooperation in the international arena.
