The University of Hong Kong (HKU) recently announced its commitment to enhancing student diversity and ensuring a balance of students from various countries. This initiative is aimed at creating a more inclusive and global learning environment on campus.

This year, HKU admitted approximately 1,200 non-local students, a significant increase from the 900 admitted the previous year. Notably, around half of the non-local students hailed from mainland China. Professor Bennett Yim, the director of undergraduate admissions and international student exchange, highlighted that there was a decline in applications from Europe and North America compared to other regions.

Yim emphasized the importance of mainland Chinese students due to their proximity to Hong Kong, which allows them to have a better understanding of what HKU has to offer. He stated that efforts are being made to attract students from various parts of the world to promote Hong Kong as an attractive educational destination.

When questioned about the issue of students using fake degrees to secure admission, vice-president Ian Holliday expressed confidence in the university’s ability to detect fraudulent qualifications. He mentioned that HKU has implemented stringent measures to identify fake credentials, including scrutinizing URLs and certificates submitted during the application process. Holliday assured that a team of experts is dedicated to uncovering any questionable qualifications to maintain the integrity of the admissions process.

Additionally, HKU is dedicated to ensuring that every student admitted to the university is deserving of their place. The institution prioritizes merit-based admissions to uphold academic standards and foster a diverse student body that contributes to a vibrant learning community.

By actively pursuing student diversity and implementing rigorous verification processes, HKU aims to uphold its reputation as a globally competitive institution that welcomes students from all backgrounds. The university’s commitment to inclusivity and academic excellence underscores its dedication to providing a transformative educational experience for all students.
