A group in Hong Kong has set a bold goal of putting an end to school bullying in the next ten years. The Council of Early Childhood Education and Services conducted a survey in July, which revealed that one in three primary school students have experienced bullying. This alarming statistic has prompted the group to call for a collective effort from all sectors of society to address the issue.

During a conference, Sansan Ching, the director of the council, emphasized the importance of reducing the number of bullying cases to zero in the coming decade. This ambitious target will require the support of various stakeholders, including legislative council members, government officials, influencers, and the media.

To raise awareness about bullying, the group has launched an “anti-bullying month” initiative. This campaign includes activities such as a casual wear day, a drawing competition, and family workshops. Additionally, a petition signed by parents, teachers, lawyers, and medical professionals was submitted to the government, advocating for a legal framework to protect students and more training for teachers to effectively address bullying incidents.

The Education Bureau has issued guidelines requiring schools to promptly intervene and follow up on bullying cases. Psychiatrist Doris Chan highlighted the long-term psychological effects of bullying on victims, including lower self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, mood disorders, and in some cases, post-traumatic stress disorder. Chan underscored the importance of creating a positive and supportive school environment to prevent such detrimental consequences.

In order to combat bullying effectively, it is crucial for the entire community to come together and take a stand against this harmful behavior. By raising awareness, implementing preventive measures, and providing support to victims, Hong Kong can work towards creating a safe and inclusive educational environment for all students.
