Vietnam and Thailand have gone ahead and bumped up their ties to the highest level of diplomatic cooperation. Analysts believe this move showcases Hanoi’s strategy of strengthening regional relationships, all while quietly assessing the strategic importance of its partners using a “two-tiered stratification system”. The newly-minted Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), solidified during Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s recent trip to Hanoi, now puts Thailand in the league of countries with whom Vietnam has bolstered its diplomatic framework in recent times.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed that the CSP marks a significant milestone and a strategic commitment, signifying a breakthrough in the extent and depth of cooperation between the two nations. A joint statement released after the meeting outlined plans to ramp up bilateral trade to US$25 billion by 2030, with a focus on clean energy, the digital economy, and advanced agriculture. Thai government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub chimed in, mentioning that the enhanced ties will also strengthen collaboration in political and security realms, notably in the fight against transnational crime and drug trafficking.
Not really sure why this matters, but Vietnam has inked its initial CSP with China back in 2008, forging partnerships with a slew of countries since then, including the US, Russia, India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. In fact, they’ve sealed the deal on the last 10 agreements just since 2022. Seems like Vietnam is really stepping up its game on the global stage, huh?
