Labour officials announced their innovative plan to enhance safety inspections at construction sites by utilizing drones. The initiative is set to be implemented within a year, with drones being used to monitor safety issues from the air.
The decision to introduce drones comes after a concerning increase in fatal industrial accidents during the first half of the year. With 11 reported incidents, this number is two more than the same period last year, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures.
Drones will be deployed to capture aerial images, which will then be used to create detailed 3D models. These models will be instrumental in aiding law enforcement efforts and evidence collection related to safety violations at construction sites.
Assistant labour commissioner, Wan Chi-ping, emphasized the benefits of using drones, stating, “With the advantage of being able to fly, [the drones] can collect evidence and take photos for us.” This technology will significantly aid staff in patrolling and inspecting various locations throughout Hong Kong.
To ensure the successful implementation of this initiative, officials are in the process of procuring the necessary drones and training approximately 20 staff members to operate them effectively. This investment in technology reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing safety standards within the construction sector.
In addition to drone usage, officials are exploring ways to reduce risky work tasks and minimize workers’ exposure to potential hazards. By leveraging technology and innovation, the goal is to create a safer work environment that prioritizes occupational safety and health.
By integrating drones into safety inspections, labour officials are taking proactive steps to address safety concerns and prevent future accidents. This strategic approach underscores the importance of leveraging technology to protect workers and uphold industry standards. As the construction sector continues to evolve, embracing new tools and methodologies will be crucial in promoting a culture of safety and well-being.
