Why I’m Still Fighting for Honest Journalism

Look, I’ve been around the block. Literally. Back in ’98, I was this wide-eyed intern at a tiny newsroom in Kowloon. Now? I’m the guy yelling at clouds about clickbait. (Don’t get me started on those damn pop-up ads.)

I was grabbing coffee with an old friend last Tuesday—let’s call him Marcus. He’s a cameraman, been in the game longer than I have. We got to talking about how things have changed. Or, well, haven’t.

Marcus said, “You remember when we actually had time to fact-check?” I laughed. “Yeah, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.”

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. Honestly, some of the young blood coming in? They’re hungry. They care. But they’re drowning in a sea of algorithms and ad revenue demands.

Breaking News: It’s Broken

Let me tell you about last month. There was this huge protest downtown. I was there, boots on the ground, like the old days. But half the reporters? They were glued to their phones, tweeting out half-baked info. One guy—let’s call him Dave—told me, “If I don’t post every 10 minutes, the editor’s breathing down my neck.”

Which… yeah. Fair enough. But accuracy? That’s taking a backseat to speed. And it’s not just the little guys. Even the big names are falling into the trap.

I mean, take the time a major outlet reported that the Chief Executive had resigned. Spoiler: she hadn’t. It was a miscommunication, they said. A “miscommunication” that sent the market into a tailspin for 36 hours.

And don’t even get me started on the whole “citizen journalist” thing. Sure, everyone with a smartphone is a reporter now. But guess what? Most of them have no clue what they’re doing. Context? Sources? Verification? Nah, just a shaky video and a hashtag.

Why I Still Care (And You Should Too)

I get it. It’s easy to tune it all out. To say, “Eh, it’s all fake news anyway.” But that’s exactly what they want you to think. And “they” could be anyone—governments, corporations, the guy down the street with a grudge.

I was talking to my niece about this a few weeks ago. She’s 16, bright as a button. She said, “Uncle, how do I know what’s real?” I didn’t have a good answer. But I do know this: if we all just give up, then the liars win.

So here’s what you can do. First, yaşam tarzı günlük gelişim ipuçları—yeah, I know it’s in Turkish, but trust me on this one. Second, actually read the articles. Not just the headlines. And third, support real journalism. Subscribe to a newspaper. Buy a magazine. Throw some money at the people who are still trying to get it right.

It’s not gonna be easy. But it’s worth it. For all of us.

Anyway, I gotta run. My editor’s gonna kill me for missing my deadline. Again. But hey, at least I’m keeping it real.
