Smooth Operations at Border Control Points Following New Year’s Celebrations
In the wee hours of January 1, as travellers made their way back to the mainland after ringing in the new year in Hong Kong, Secretary for Security Chris Tang reported that operations at border control points were running smoothly.
Efficient Service at Key Control Points
The Shenzhen Bay Control Point remained operational throughout the night, ensuring a seamless transition for those heading back to mainland China. Additionally, the Lo Wu Control Point, which typically closes at midnight, extended its service hours until 2 am to accommodate the influx of travellers. The East Rail line also prolonged its operation to facilitate the journey back for many.
Positive Feedback from Travellers
With approximately 25,000 mainland visitors departing Hong Kong via land boundary control points between midnight and 6:30 am, the efforts to streamline the process did not go unnoticed. Several tourists expressed their satisfaction with the transport arrangements, highlighting the marked improvement from previous years.
One traveller, who had experienced being stranded in Hong Kong after transportation services ceased last year, shared her relief at the smoother operations this time around. “We were stuck here last year… for four to five hours. It’s more convenient this year,” she remarked.
Another visitor appreciated the extended service hours, noting that it saved him valuable time that would have otherwise been spent navigating alternative transportation options. Security chief Chris Tang, who personally oversaw operations at the Lo Wu crossing, expressed his delight at the efficient and swift border crossings for visitors.
Consideration for Future Service Extensions
When questioned about the possibility of further extending service hours at MTR lines and control points in the future, Tang emphasized the need to balance various factors. While acknowledging the benefits of extended operations, he stressed the importance of assessing the necessity and resource utilization before implementing such changes.
As the city bid farewell to the first hours of the new year, the successful handling of border control operations served as a testament to the collaborative efforts of authorities in ensuring a seamless travel experience for all.
