Police arrested 59 individuals on Tuesday in connection with illegal loan shark activities, seizing over HK$1 million in cash along with other relevant documents. The suspects, aged between 20 and 76, were allegedly involved in a syndicate targeting foreign domestic helpers.
According to the authorities, the syndicate members employed various tactics to deduct money from the borrowers, including coercing them to make unnecessary purchases or pay excessive administration fees. As a result, the victims were left with significantly less money than they had initially borrowed and were forced to repay the loans at exorbitant interest rates.
Ho Yan-ki, the Chief Inspector of Hong Kong Island Regional Crime Unit, highlighted that the syndicate preyed on individuals in need of financial assistance. He urged foreign domestic helpers and their employers to report any encounters with such loan shark syndicates to the police.
