Dennis Lo Approved as Head Scientist by Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has recently announced the appointment of renowned molecular biologist Dennis Lo as its new vice-chancellor and president. This decision comes after the unanimous approval by the university council on September 27, 2024. Dennis Lo, who currently serves as the associate research dean of the institution’s medical faculty, has been recommended as the sole candidate for this prestigious position.

With a wealth of experience in various roles within the university and the public domain, Dennis Lo is seen as the perfect candidate to lead the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is set to succeed the outgoing president, Rocky Tuan, in January 2025 when his five-year term officially begins. Tuan faced criticism during his tenure for his perceived sympathy towards students involved in the 2019 protests and unrest in Hong Kong.

During a press conference held on Friday, the council chairperson, John Chai, highlighted Dennis Lo’s extensive administrative experience and networks, emphasizing his ability to enhance the university’s academic achievements on an international level. In his own remarks, Dennis Lo expressed his commitment to upholding the “humanistic spirit” of CUHK, where he has been a part of since 1997.

Reflecting on his deep connection to CUHK, Lo conveyed his eagerness to collaborate closely with the council in shaping the university’s future endeavors. As he prepares to take on this new role, he aims to build upon the foundation laid by his predecessor and further elevate CUHK’s reputation globally.

The outgoing president, Rocky Tuan, announced his departure in January, citing the opportune moment for a leadership transition following a governance structure overhaul within the university. While Tuan faced challenges during his term, Lo commended him for raising CUHK’s profile internationally over his seven-year tenure.

Addressing the unprecedented events of 2019, Dennis Lo acknowledged the impact of those turbulent times on the university but expressed optimism about moving forward and focusing on advancing knowledge and education within a supportive academic environment. He stressed the importance of academic freedom as a cornerstone of the university while underscoring the need for compliance with the law in academic research.

As a member of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit, Dennis Lo highlighted his role in representing CUHK’s voice in decision-making processes in mainland China. While emphasizing the importance of academic freedoms, he reiterated the significance of aligning academic practices with legal requirements to prevent crossing any red lines.

In response to queries about the student union at CUHK, both Chai and Lo addressed the potential for restoring the defunct union, which has been inactive since 2021. Recognizing the student union as an integral part of the university experience, Dennis Lo affirmed CUHK’s support for facilitating the registration of a new student union in compliance with regulations.

Chai explained that the council would need to review a modified constitution for the student union to proceed with its registration as an independent society. While no formal proposal has been presented to the council thus far, both Chai and Lo expressed a willingness to address the matter in the upcoming year to enable the student union’s reinstatement.

With Dennis Lo poised to assume leadership at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, there is anticipation for a new chapter of academic excellence, international collaboration, and a renewed focus on upholding the values of the institution. As he prepares to step into his new role, Dennis Lo’s appointment marks a significant milestone for CUHK and sets the stage for continued growth and innovation under his guidance.
