The Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions is advocating for a 5.5 percent pay raise for workers in the upcoming year. This call to action comes after a recent survey conducted by the group, which revealed that over 60 percent of the surveyed workers received an average pay increase of 4.5 percent this year. The remaining workers mostly experienced a salary freeze, leading to dissatisfaction among over half of the respondents.

According to the survey results, more than 70 percent of workers believe that their pay should be adjusted in accordance with inflation. Chairman Lam Chun-sing explained that the decision to propose a 5.5 percent pay raise was influenced by various factors such as inflation rates, the current business climate, and overall economic growth. This figure represents a slight decrease from the previous year’s recommendation of a six percent raise.

Lam acknowledged that while some sectors like transportation have seen more significant salary increases, others such as construction and catering have faced challenges, including salary freezes. He attributed this disparity to the economic conditions, citing delays in private construction projects as a contributing factor.

The group’s proposal for a 5.5 percent pay raise aims to strike a balance between addressing workers’ needs for higher salaries and considering the prevailing economic circumstances. By advocating for this moderate increase, the Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions hopes to support workers in maintaining their purchasing power and financial stability in the face of inflation and economic uncertainties.

In light of the ongoing challenges faced by workers in various industries, the push for a 5.5 percent pay raise underscores the importance of fair compensation and recognition of employees’ contributions to the workforce. As discussions and negotiations between labour unions and employers continue, finding a mutually agreeable solution that benefits both parties will be crucial in fostering a harmonious and productive work environment.
