Alright, so I stumbled upon this article that talks about how hundreds of underprivileged families in Hong Kong are feeling pretty stressed out because the government is planning to end a trial handout scheme next month. Apparently, these families are worried that they won’t be able to afford essential items, like academic support for their kids, once the scheme is over.
The Society for Community Organisation (SoCO) did a survey and found that half of the 330 poor households they spoke to in May were either receiving or applying for money to help with their expenses. They’re asking the government to keep the scheme going because it’s been a big help to these families. Sze Lai-shan, who is the deputy director of SoCO, thinks the cash allowance is a good thing because it helps protect the housing rights of low-income families.
The handout of HK$1,300 to HK$3,900 a month for families waiting for public housing for more than three years is set to end on June 30. Sze mentioned that the longer a household has been getting the allowance, the more it’s been helping them out. If the government suddenly stops the handout, it’s definitely going to make things harder for these families. So yeah, seems like a pretty tough situation for them.
Not really sure why this matters, but it’s kind of sad to think about these families struggling to make ends meet. Hopefully, the government will listen to SoCO and extend the handout scheme to help out those in need. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for them.
