The iconic Grand Ocean Cinema, a 56-year-old landmark in Tsim Sha Tsui, is set to close its doors for good on June 2. The operator’s tenancy contract is coming to an end, leading to the latest closure in a series of movie theatres shutting down in the city. Golden Harvest, the cinema chain operator, announced the closure on Wednesday, making it the fourth movie theatre under its management to shut down since April of last year. Despite this closure, the chain still has five other locations operating in the city.
“For nearly fifty years, Grand Ocean has stood as a prominent cinema in Tsim Sha Tsui, entertaining generations of movie enthusiasts and witnessing the evolution of cinema through the years,” the chain shared on social media. With the expiration of the rental contract, Grand Ocean will officially cease operations on June 2, 2025, marking the end of an era for this beloved cinema. Golden Harvest expressed their anticipation of welcoming patrons at their other cinemas in the future.
To commemorate the venue’s last day, the company has planned a special “blind-box” movie night on June 1. The event will feature classic cinematic works, providing a nostalgic farewell to the beloved cinema. On the final day of operations, attendees can enjoy food and products on offer for prices ranging from HK$40 to HK$65. Fans and movie buffs alike are encouraged to make the most of this final opportunity to experience the magic of Grand Ocean Cinema before it bids farewell.
