The Chief Secretary, Eric Chan, announced that the government will be collaborating with various sectors to further enhance patriotic education efforts in the city. This initiative is seen as crucial for the development of the aviation industry in China.

During a photo exhibition commemorating the 75th anniversary of the “Uprising of the Two Airlines”, Chan highlighted the significance of the event which took place on November 9, 1949. This historic incident involved 12 aircraft from two Nationalist-controlled airlines departing from Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong, and instead of following their planned flight paths, they headed to Beijing to join the new Communist government. Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed and honored with a banquet hosted by Premier Zhou Enlai.

This event has been recognized as a pivotal moment in Chinese history and was later praised by Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou as the starting point of China’s civil aviation industry with unlimited potential. Chan emphasized the importance of showcasing such events through photo exhibitions and microfilms to shed light on Hong Kong’s unique contributions to the country’s civil aviation development.

Moreover, the Chief Secretary mentioned that the SAR government has been actively utilizing various events and methods to instill patriotism and strengthen the national identity among the people. As part of these efforts, the Museum of History will establish a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the “Uprising of the Two Airlines”, and collaboration with mainland authorities will be sought to obtain relevant materials for display.

Director Cui Xiaofeng of Air China also expressed the airline’s unwavering support for the One Country, Two Systems principle and reassured their commitment to Hong Kong. He emphasized the contributions made by Air China in promoting the city’s economic prosperity, social harmony, and stability. Looking ahead, Cui Xiaofeng pledged to continue supporting Hong Kong’s status as an international aviation hub, reinforcing its role as a super-connector and a significant value-adder.
