A former inmate, John, shared how a local charity, the Sports Change Life Foundation, has played a crucial role in helping him reintegrate into society and overcome various challenges in his life. John is now an ambassador for the foundation, which offers sports companionship and mentorship to inmates, rehabilitated individuals, and those facing adversity.

The Sports Change Life Foundation is a beneficiary of this year’s Operation Santa Claus (OSC) and has launched the “Free Running Peer Exercise Reform Plan – Join Together to Save Calories for the Warmth Campaign.” This initiative involves exchanging the number of calories burnt during exercise for food and Christmas meals to be donated to those in need.

John expressed how participating in the running program has helped him break through obstacles, build confidence, and develop a positive mindset necessary for his reintegration into society. The program also aims to train inmates and rehabilitated individuals as ambassadors who can visit schools to share their experiences, inspire youth to avoid drugs and crime, promote healthy values, and prevent delinquency.

Chu Ki-sum, the Fundraising Director, highlighted that the funding received would cover expenses for professional coaching, running equipment, resources, and school visits. Additionally, the peer-running programs include gatherings to build friendships and provide support to participants in their journey towards integration into society.

The collaboration between RTHK and South China Morning Post for OSC aims to support charitable projects focused on various aspects, including children and youth, the elderly, the community, individuals with physical and mental disabilities, medical initiatives, and environmental causes. If you are interested in making a donation to support these projects, you can visit the Operation Santa Claus website at https://oschk.org.

The impact of initiatives like the Free Running Peer Exercise Reform Plan extends beyond physical fitness, providing participants with essential life skills, confidence, and a sense of community. By supporting programs that empower individuals like John to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society, we can create a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
