A lawmaker representing the Kowloon East Constituency, Bill Tang, has raised concerns about the redevelopment plans for Choi Hung. The housing authorities have proposed a three-phase redevelopment plan that is set to be completed by 2048. Tang highlighted the fact that residents in Choi Hung would have to live with a construction site for over 20 years, as buildings are demolished and rebuilt one by one. This prolonged construction period poses safety risks for residents living in older buildings.
Tang emphasized the importance of offering diverse housing options for affected residents. He suggested that residents from the first phase of redevelopment should have the opportunity to choose from various housing options, including new developments like Mei Tung Estate or the Home Ownership Scheme housing. Additionally, he proposed the idea of allowing residents to move into empty flats within Choi Hung during the later phases of redevelopment.
In order to assist elderly families with the relocation process, Tang mentioned the need to recruit volunteers to provide support and guidance. One Choi Hung resident, Tsang, expressed his satisfaction with relocating to Mei Tung Estate, although he noted that the transportation in the new area is not as convenient as in Choi Hung.
Another resident, Pang, shared his plans to close his small shop in Choi Hung Estate after 20 years of operation. He cited the changing spending patterns and increasing ageing population as factors that have made it difficult to sustain the business in a public housing estate.
On the other hand, a woman named Fan expressed her hope that certain elements of Choi Hung Estate would be preserved, as they hold sentimental value for many residents. As the redevelopment plans progress, it is essential to consider the needs and preferences of the affected residents to ensure a smooth transition and provide a sense of continuity amidst the changes.
