Organ donors in Hong Kong have seen a significant decline of 60 percent over the past decade, according to the Hong Kong Transplant Sports Association. Dr. Chau Ka-foon, the founder and honorary chairperson of the association, pointed out that one of the main reasons for this drop is the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. During this period, not only did the number of potential donors decrease due to fatalities, but hospitals also had to close down and medical staff were infected.
In a recent survey conducted by the association, many individuals expressed their willingness to donate their organs. However, Dr. Chau noted that there are various factors preventing them from taking the necessary steps to do so. She emphasized that it is not a matter of being unwilling to donate, but rather a lack of awareness about the importance of organ donation. Some people may not have direct contact with patients in need, which contributes to their ignorance about the issue.
Dr. Chau also highlighted the busy lifestyle of Hong Kong residents as a barrier to organ donation. She mentioned that many individuals do not take the time to go online and register as organ donors due to their hectic schedules. To address this issue and raise awareness about the importance of organ donation, the association has planned a sports day for patients in October. This event aims to support patients in their recovery journey and encourage more people to consider becoming organ donors.
One inspiring story that demonstrates the transformative impact of organ donation is that of Peony Choi, a former kidney inflammation patient who is now a competitive badminton athlete. Reflecting on her experience, Peony shared, “One year before my kidney transplant, I had to stop all my work and stay at home, just waiting. I was physically weak and unable to do much.” However, after receiving a kidney transplant and engaging in badminton, Peony was able to regain her strength and pursue her passion for sports.
Peony’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the life-changing potential of organ donation. By increasing awareness, addressing misconceptions, and encouraging more individuals to register as donors, Hong Kong can work towards reversing the decline in organ donors and saving more lives in need of transplants. It is essential for the community to come together, support one another, and prioritize the gift of life through organ donation. Let us all take a moment to reflect on the impact we can make by pledging to donate our organs and making a difference in someone else’s life.
