Experts are warning people to be cautious about thyroid eye disease, a condition that causes inflammation and damage to the tissues around the eye. The College of Ophthalmologists and the Ophthalmology Society have emphasized that this disease is often linked to an overactive thyroid gland, but it can also occur in patients with an underactive or normally functioning thyroid gland.

Dr. Kelvin Chong from the College of Ophthalmologists has advised individuals to be vigilant for symptoms such as bulging eyes and double vision. He mentioned that Asian patients may find it challenging to recognize the disease due to their darker skin color, thicker skin, and higher pain threshold. Symptoms like proptosis or double vision may only become apparent once there are noticeable deformities of the eye in Asian patients.

In addition to bulging eyes and double vision, common symptoms of thyroid eye disease include eye discomfort, visual dysfunction, and disfigurement. It’s crucial to note that this condition can lead to permanent damage to eyesight and physical appearance, as well as severe complications like nerve compression, corneal ulcer, and even blindness.

Individuals at a higher risk of developing thyroid eye disease include men, smokers, individuals aged 50 or above, those leading stressful lifestyles, and patients with thyroid gland disorders. Dr. Chong highlighted that there are various treatment options available depending on the stage and severity of the disease. Treatment ranges from medical interventions that modulate immune functions to surgical procedures that expand the socket, realign the eye, or eyelid.

An example shared was that of a 90-year-old man named Chau, who was diagnosed with thyroid eye disease in mid-2023 after being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a year prior. Chau’s son mentioned that his father experienced symptoms like dry and swollen eyes and underwent treatment with steroid therapy, radiotherapy, and immunosuppressants. Following treatment, Chau reported feeling more confident working on the computer and continuing to write a book. He also noted significant improvements in the appearance of his eyes and relief from dryness.

It is essential for individuals to be aware of the symptoms of thyroid eye disease, especially those at higher risk, and seek medical attention promptly if they experience any concerning signs. Early detection and appropriate treatment can help prevent long-term complications and preserve both eyesight and physical appearance.
