Seven individuals have been sentenced in connection with a 2019 bomb plot in Hong Kong, with the mastermind receiving more than 23 years in jail. The group, known as the “Dragon Slaying Brigade,” was involved in a plan to plant bombs and target police officers during a rally on International Human Rights Day.
Ng Chi-hung, identified as the mastermind of the plot, pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit the bombing of prescribed objects and possession of arms with intent to endanger life. He was handed the heaviest sentence of 23 years and 10 months. Wong Chun-keung, the leader of the group, received a sentence of 13 years and six months. The remaining five defendants were given jail terms ranging from five years and 10 months to 12 years.
The trial marked Hong Kong’s first-ever case under a United Nations anti-terrorism ordinance, highlighting the seriousness of the charges. The court heard that the defendants had planned to plant two bombs in Wan Chai during the rally, posing a significant threat to public safety.
Chief Superintendent Steve Li emphasized the severity of the case, stating that the group was actively preparing to carry out the attack. He noted that if the police had not intervened in time, the consequences could have been catastrophic, impacting not only protesters but also innocent bystanders.
