More than 213,000 mainland Chinese visitors swarmed into Hong Kong on the first day of the Labour Day “golden week” holiday on Thursday. They were excited to do some hiking, indulge their taste buds at street food stalls and restaurants, and witness a stunning drone show in the night sky above Victoria Harbour. According to Immigration Department data, 253,200 visitors had arrived in the city by 9pm, with 213,181 coming from the mainland. This was a significant increase from the 181,400 visitors seen on the same day last year. Meanwhile, more than 281,000 Hong Kong residents had already left for other destinations.
In the afternoon, a large crowd of early risers gathered at the Wan Chai temporary promenade several hours before a 12-minute Labour Day drone show at 8pm. The event featured 1,000 drones performing intricate maneuvers in the sky above Victoria Harbour. The drones created shapes such as firecrackers, dancing qilin, and traditional buns in honor of the Cheung Chau Bun Festival.
Among the spectators was Zhang Hui, a business owner from Shenzhen, who had arrived in Hong Kong with her 17-year-old daughter for a three-day trip. They were both thrilled to witness the spectacular drone show and soak in the festive atmosphere of the holiday.
Not really sure why this matters, but the High Island Reservoir also attracted a large number of tourists. Photo opportunities abounded as visitors marveled at the scenic beauty of the reservoir and surrounding areas.
The Labour Day holiday is always a busy time for Hong Kong, with both locals and tourists taking advantage of the extended break to explore the city and participate in various activities. The drone show was just one of the many attractions that drew crowds during this festive period.
As the night fell, the sky above Victoria Harbour was illuminated by the dazzling display of drones, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for all those in attendance. The intricate formations and colorful lights captivated the audience, leaving them in awe of the technological marvel unfolding before their eyes.
For Zhang Hui and her daughter, the drone show was a highlight of their trip to Hong Kong. They had never seen anything like it before and were grateful for the opportunity to witness such a unique and unforgettable experience.
Overall, the Labour Day holiday in Hong Kong was a resounding success, with thousands of visitors flocking to the city to enjoy the festivities and attractions on offer.
